Fosamax is used as a preventative measure as well as a treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Fosamax works by preventing or slowing down the weakening of the bones that can cause serious problems in older women, such as hip fractures and stooped posture. Fosamax is taken orally in tablet form once a day. This medication should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach with a full glass of plain water.

It is recommended that you wait at least 30 minutes after taking Fosamax to eat, drink, or take any other medications. In addition, Fosamax should not be taken with coffee, mineral water, orange juice, milk, or any dairy products. Furthermore, the tablet should be swallowed whole and you should refrain from lying down after taking this medication. Sitting upright or standing helps you to get the full dose of Fosamax.

While taking Fosamax you should refrain from drinking any alcoholic beverages. Side effects with Fosamax are not common but they can and do occur in some patients. Possible side effects include: gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, stomach irritation, acid reflux, stomach pain, headache, or muscle pain. If you are having trouble breathing, you feel chest pain or extreme heartburn, or you are vomiting blood or material that looks like ground coffee, seek medical attention immediately.

Discount Fosamax for Osteoporosis Prevention

It is extremely important that women on a Fosamax regime also take calcium and vitamin D supplements. Osteoporosis can lead to a host of problems if not prevented and/or treated early. Fosamax can significantly decrease weakening of the bones and therefore more and more doctors are prescribing this medication to their postmenopausal patients who are at risk for osteoporosis.
