Many supplements are available on the market that claim to alleviate the pain associated with osteoarthritis. Some of those supplements contain glucosamine. Glucosamine is found in joints and helps attract water into the joint space to lubricate the cartilage and protect the bones from rubbing against each other.

Claims Made by Glucosamine Supplements

There are many claims made by supplements that contain glucosamine. Some claim that by drawing water into the joint, glucosamine supplements can protect the joint and tendons from incurring injuries. Others go one step further and claim that glucosamine supplements can reverse osteoarthritis. Another claim made by manufacturers of these supplements is that they decrease inflammation in the joints.

There have been some studies that show the benefits of glucosamine in alleviating the pain and stiffness that arthritis causes. A common treatment for arthritis is to use a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as ibuprofen. Studies in Europe, however, have shown that taking glucosamine supplements for one to three months is more effective than taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for the same period of time.

The cost for some glucosamine supplements may exceed a dollar a day. If you only experience intermittent joint pain, it may not be worth investing in these supplements. Those with a severe case of arthritis may want to consider trying the supplements if their condition has affected their lifestyle. If you have tried using anti-inflammatory drugs and have felt no noticeable difference, you may want to change your regimen for a few months to see if glucosamine supplements are better for you. You should speak with your physician, however, before changing your treatment so that he can provide you with expert advice.
