Menopause Supplements

Menopause supplements are natural and effective aids against most menopausal and PMS symptoms. In many cases, over-the-counter herbal menopause supplements are as effective as hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Menopausal supplements work using phytoestrogens, the natural hormones found in plants. Most menopause supplements feature the following ingredients in various combinations: black cohosh, soy, red clover, or chasteberry. Additional ingredients frequently included are vitamin E, folic acid, and B6 for heart health, calcium for strong bones, and kava-kava to control mood swings, depression, and aid against sleep disorders.

Primary Sources of Phytoestrogens in Menopause Supplements

All phytoestrogens work the same way. As estrogen levels drop, phytoestrogens bind to the same cells estrogen once did, and help estrogen levels even out. In addition to easing menopausal symptoms, this is believed to inhibit many other hormone related disorders like breast cancer and endometriosis.

Black cohosh is the grandmother of all menopause symptom fighters. Black cohosh helps reduce night sweats, vaginal dryness and painful cramps. Soy isoflavones are rich with phytoestrogens and are also good for keeping bones strong. Chasteberry is also rich with naturally occurring hormones, plus is reputed to be very effective in reducing painful cramps, breast soreness and fullness, bloating, mood swings, and headaches. Red clover, too, contains phytohormones and is especially effective against vaginal dryness. There is no indication that any of these herbs are dangerous, even when taken daily for long periods of time.
