Men's supplements can include all the vitamins and minerals found in multi-vitamins as well as in other ingredients that are specific to men's health. For example, some formulas contain Lycopene, which is an antioxidant that a recent medical study has linked to prostate health. With one in three men at risk of developing prostate problems, taking a supplement may be an easy way to minimize your chances of developing future problems.

One thing that men should note in selecting nutritional supplements is whether or not they contain iron. Some supplements will contain high levels of iron because women need to supplement their iron intake during their child-bearing years. In contrast, higher quantities of iron for men can put them at a greater risk of developing heart disease. You should be careful of this not only in supplements but also in products such as energy bars and powder drinks.

Eating fish as little as once a week has been shown to decrease the occurrence of heart disease in men. Many types of fish contain the fatty acids omega-3 and 6, which are important to the immune system and hormone production, as well as acting as anti-inflammatories. If you do not eat fish at all, you may also want to consider taking a supplement of omega-3 and 6.

What to Look for When Buying Men's Supplements

As there is not a government body that regulates the production of supplements, it can be hard to know which ones are actually good for you. If you can find a supplement that meets USP standards, you can be sure that it will dissolve within your body during a specified time frame. Supplements that do not meet USP standard may be wasted if they do not dissolve. You should also review some literature on the purity and quality of any herbal supplements that you consider taking.
