Sleep AidsWritten by Serena Berger People used to be told to drink a glass of warm milk before going to sleep, as this was believed to make it easier to fall asleep. Sleeping disorders such as insomnia, however, may require more extensive treatment. Insomnia is a condition that can last for as little as a few days to longer than three weeks in the case of chronic insomnia. If you suffer from chronic insomnia, you may need to consult a physician or specialist for treatment. If you live in a noisy area such as on a main street in a city, noise may be a contributing factor to your difficulty sleeping. Purchasing ear plugs may be all that is necessary for you to get a night of sound sleep. These are sold in packages that contain multiple pairs and can be used not only for help sleeping, but also as protection when attending events such as concerts. Medication Can Help You SleepIf noise is not the problem for you, you may need to take medication to help you sleep. Sleeping pills are available both over the counter and with a prescription. You might first try over the counter medication and talk with your physician about prescription medication if you do not experience any beneficial effects. Whichever type of medication you use, be advised that some are habit forming and therefore it may be difficult to stop using them. If you find yourself developing a tolerance, you should talk to a doctor immediately because there are potentially serious consequences. Not getting enough sleep can affect all aspects of your life. Your reflexes may be slower and you may be less productive at work. Your social interactions may also be affected if you are sleep deprived. If sleeping aids available at your pharmacy are of no use, you should meet with your physician as soon as you can so that you do not continue to suffer from a lack of sleep.
