Zinc controls the activity of roughly 100 different enzymes. Zinc promotes normal growth from pregnancy through adolescence, helps wounds heal faster, and maintains our sense of smell and taste.

If you have even a mild or moderate case of zinc deficiency, your immune system will feel the effects. Your T-cells (T-lymphocytes) help fight off bacterial and viral infections, and they need zinc to function properly. Zinc can also help heal skin problems, such as skin ulcers.

How To Take Advantage of Zinc Benefits

There is one food in particular that can boost your level of zinc. Oysters are the most zinc-rich food you could possibly eat, containing higher levels of zinc per serving than any other food. Other good sources of zinc are red meat, dairy products, and nuts. Watch out for foods that actually decrease the amount of zinc you can absorb, such as legumes, cereals, and whole grain breads. Eat these foods in moderation.

If you feel you just won't get enough zinc from the foods listed above, investigate the many options for zinc supplements. The zinc benefits are so great that you cannot afford to be missing out on a full day's complement of zinc. Zinc is especially important during the winter months, when the cold and flu infections are omnipresent.
