Changing Careers

There comes a point in most people's lives when they consider changing careers. Their current career may not offer enough money, or it may not be fulfilling. It may even be that a chosen career is being outmoded by new technology. For whatever reason, millions of people find themselves at crossroads every day. And while most people tend to find their way back into the familiar, some do decide to break off their current jobs and head in an entirely new direction.

A career coach will always agree that change can be positive; that's why finding a career coach can be an excellent first step when looking into new jobs. In fact, part of the job of any good career coach is to help design life plans that are malleable, not etched in concrete. They wisely realize that many of our most exciting opportunities come when we avail ourselves of new ways of thinking or start learning new skills. This isn't to say that you should walk off the assembly line tomorrow, go home, and start cranking out that novel you've always dreamed of writing. But, with the help of a career coach, you may be able to start scheduling time to at least begin work on your artistic projects in addition to your day job.

Changing Careers Takes Chutzpah

Whenever we contemplate change in our lives, we immediately encounter resistance. It may be from within ourselves with thoughts of worthlessness or doubt. Or it may be through relatives who resent our attempts to redefine ourselves or simply add diversity to our lives. What a coach can help you understand is that this resistance is a good thing. It tests us to see whether or not we're really committed to our new course.

If you're pondering changing careers, you may want to work with a career coach, since they can usually help you draw up a sensible plan. The more ambitious you are to start, the greater the likelihood for disappointment. Start small. Get new business cards made. Take a class at your community college. Read a how-to book. Ask experts to share their knowledge with you. These are but a few of the tactics that can help you get underway, and a coach will be able to offer even more.
