Chocolate is not known as a healthy snack by most people. However, many do not know that chocolate contains ingredients that can provide health benefits. Ingredients in chocolate may help to promote a healthy heart and can promote a lifting of one's mood as well, according to many different research studies. Chocolate contains vitamins B1, B2, C, D, and E as well as minerals such as magnesium and potassium. It also acts as a libido enhancer for women.

Recognizable Benefits of Eating Chocolate

Chocolate has been recognized as an aphrodisiac by many cultures over past years. In other words, chocolate is known to arouse or increase sexual desire. The word, "aphrodisiac," was named after Aphrodite, the goddess of love. It is appropriate that Aphrodite was female because chocolate only acts as an aphrodisiac for women. It is not known to increase sexual desire for men. Perhaps this is part of the reason that 40 percent of women admit to chocolate cravings, while only 15 percent of men crave chocolate on average.

Chocolate is recognized for its antioxidant properties because it contains flavonoids. Other flavonoid-rich foods include peanuts, onions, red wine, tea, cranberries, strawberries, apples, and some additional fruits and vegetables. The flavonoids found in chocolate are called flavonols. Dark chocolate has the most flavonols of all types of chocolate. The manufacturing of cocoa powder and chocolate syrup often removes most of the flavonoids from the mixture. A solid, natural piece of dark chocolate provides the most health benefits of any chocolate product in regards to receiving antioxidants.

In addition to providing antioxidants and ingredients that stimulate libido, chocolate can also improve overall mood. Chocolate contains the neurotransmitter serotonin, which sends signals to the brain to produce feelings of pleasure. The feeling of an endorphin release is similar to the feeling after running several miles, sometimes known as "runner's high." Serotonin naturally acts as an anti-depressant. Theobromine is another ingredient in chocolate that has a mood stimulating effect.
