Bacterial Vaginosis TreatmentsWritten by Emily Ledbetter Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a change in the normal bacteria of the vagina. The vagina naturally has many different types of bacteria and an upset in the balance of "good" bacteria can result in the spread of "bad" bacteria which can lead to infection, including BV. This change in the vaginal environment can be caused by a number of factors including certain antibiotics, the spreading of bacteria from the anus to the vagina, damp underwear or exercise clothing and the use of vaginal sprays or douches. BV is typically not a serious condition but in some cases it can cause infection in the uterus and fallopian tubes which can lead to additional complications. Some women have no symptoms, though common symptoms include an increase in vaginal discharge, abnormal odor, often fishy, which may be worse after sexual activity and itching or burning in or near the vagina. Natural Treatments for BVThe natural treatment plan for BV includes a five step process: 1) Kill the bad bacteria 2) Re-implant the good bacteria with probiotics 3) Excrete toxins, yeast and bad bacteria 4) Supplement the immune system and 5) Avoid future infection through maintenance supplements. Depending on the severity of the infection and the history of antibiotic use, killing the bad bacteria and re-implanting the good bacteria can take anywhere from several days to a few months. Another key to treating BV and avoiding future infection is maintaining a strong immune system through a healthy diet and lifestyle. The imbalance in vaginal bacteria may be caused by the consumption of too many refined carbohydrates and sugars. Avoiding foods such as table sugar, honey, fruit juices, flour products and soda can help to maintain an ideal bacterial environment in the vagina and a strong immune system.
