The immune system functions to protect the body from foreign items and thus defends us from disease-causing organisms. Immune system deficiencies occur when there is a defect in one or more immune mechanisms, generally revolving around the white blood cells known as T-cells or B-cells. Unfortunately the occurrence of these deficiencies is on the rise, but there are several immune system boosters that can be used to fortify our systems.

Eating well is one of the best things you can do to bolster your immune system. Recent studies have shown that yogurt is probably the best immune-boosting food. Some studies have shown that by eating at least six ounces a day, you may be able to keep yourself from getting the common cold or hay fever.

What Other Foods Act as Immune System Boosters?

Other food sources that are good immune system boosters are green leafy vegetables, nuts, sweet potatoes, kiwi fruits, and avocados. There are also a number of supplements that are recommended for strengthening the immune system. These includes echninacea, goldenseal, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and items that contain zinc.

Probably the next best thing that can be done to strengthen the immune system is to allow the body to get enough rest. The body repairs itself while you sleep and it is also the time it fortifies the T-cells, those white blood cells responsible for fending off viruses. Lastly, drinking plenty of water and keeping active through regular exercise also positively impacts the immune system.
