You should try to keep your knees elevated as much as possible while you are resting, as this can help to bring down any swelling. You can also take over the counter drugs, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to reduce pain and swelling.

If you will be going out and your knees are bothering you, you should wrap a bandage around your knee. Different kinds can be found at most drug stores that can provide you with additional support and the right fit for you. If the swelling and pain do not diminish after a few days of rest, or increase and prohibit you from putting much weight on your knees, you should visit your doctor as soon as possible.

Depending on your evaluation, your doctor may take any number of steps. He may prescribe stronger medication, such as non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, to reduce swelling, or even inject the medication directly if necessary. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to replace the knee joint depending on the extent of the damage. After this, your doctor might recommend physical therapy to help you recover and teach you how to prevent doing additional damage to your knee. There are also nutritional supplements such as glucosamine which may be helpful if your pain is a result of damaged or decreased cartilage around your knee joints.
