Vitamin C plays an important role in many functions essential to the body. Not only is it required for collagen production, it also helps the immune system and is known to fight free radicals. In addition, it has been suggested that it can help to prevent a range of ailments, from those as simple as the common cold to as life-threatening as cancer.

Collagen is a common ingredient in many moisturizers, but skin is just one of the many parts of the body that require it. Skin, bones, teeth and even blood vessels depend on collagen, which in turn depends on vitamin C for its production. The other function of vitamin C of which many are familiar is as an antioxidant.

Sources of Vitamin C

If you eat a balanced diet, you can obtain a necessary amount of vitamin C from foods. Large concentrations are found in fruits such as oranges, grapefruits and strawberries. You can also get vitamin C from many vegetables including broccoli, peppers and other leafy vegetables. If you do not eat a balanced diet, however, you may want to supplement your vitamin C intake with nutritional supplements.

Some people want to take a multivitamin so that they do not have to take several pills each day. These can provide you with the daily recommended amounts of several vitamins and minerals. One thing to consider, however, is how much vitamin C your body can absorb during a given period of time. You might want to take a time-release capsule that staggers the amount of vitamin C available to the body over a longer period of time so that more can be absorbed from a single dose.
