Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is essential for the production of collagen in our bodies. Collagen is the most abundant fiber in all of the connective tissues we have. Connective tissues provide essential support for of all our organs, including skin, the liver, kidneys, and spleen. Many people are most familiar with collagen as it pertains to wrinkles--when your body produces less collagen, you get more wrinkles because the outer layers of skin have nothing keeping them plump and smooth on the surface.

While our concern with our appearances tends to keep that role of collagen foremost in our minds, it's easy to forget an even more important role of collagen. It is also an essential component of cartilage, which is what cushions and connects our bones at the joints. Painful and debilitating arthritis results when cartilage breaks down and the bones no longer have this substance allowing them to move easily against one another.

The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of vitamin C is 60 to 90 mg per day. If you smoke, your body needs even more vitamin C--about 35 mg more--because smoking depletes levels of vitamin C. Most adults get enough (the national average is around 70mg daily) without any kind of dietary supplements, but supplements remain popular because it has been suggested that significantly greater quantities of vitamin C are beneficial to the immune system and can keep you from getting colds. The upper boundary goes as high as 2,000 mg per day, above which you may get some unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects and even kidney stones.

Time Release Vitamin C Capsules

If you are going to take a vitamin C supplement, consider taking one with a time release formula. Vitamin C is water soluble, and your body eliminates it very quickly if you take a lot at once. In order to be effective, it needs to remain in your bloodstream a lot longer than it would if you took all 1,000 or 2,000 mg at once. Studies show that you can absorb around 100 mg per hour, so a time release capsule keeps the acid from bothering your stomach and gives your blood the steady moderate supply that will be most useful to your body.
