IR laser thermometers make up a large portion of the non-contact IR temperature-sensing devices that are on the market. They use a laser to target a particular surface, and then compute the temperature of that surface by measuring the amount of infrared radiation that is coming off of the surface. By combining laser and IR technologies, IR laser thermometers offer some of the quickest, most accurate temperature readings of any industrial tool because of the precision with which they can be aimed .to pinpoint a desired target area.

Though the IR radiation that is being emitted by an object isn't the same as the temperature of that object, the two quantities are related. The calculations required to find temperature from radiation energy typically require a microprocessor and can be performed almost instantly. Many IR laser thermometers can compute temperature in half of a second or less.
