The TN203L IR thermometer is a good representative of the many pocket IR thermometers that are currently on the market. It is small, affordable, and features a combination of professional features and commercial usability. The TN203L IR thermometer is produced by Radiant Innovation Inc. in Taiwan and is available in the United States through Metris Instruments.

Comparing the TN203L IR Thermometer to Other Pocket Thermometers

Like many pocket thermometers, the TN203L measures infrared radiation with a small IR sensor in the front of the device. The user can specify whether that IR data should be converted into degrees Fahrenheit or Centigrade, and the resulting value is the quickly displayed on the large, easy-to-read LCD screen. The user can also program the emissivity of the object that is being read, in steps of one hundredth of a point.

Many pocket IR thermometers have a distance to target ratio of 1:1, which means that the distance to the target corresponds exactly to the size of the target area (One foot away means a target diameter of one foot). The TN203L IR thermometer has a distance-to-target area of 3:1, meaning that at three feet, the target area is only one foot in diameter--a considerable improvement over other pocket IR thermometers. The TN203L also features a bright laser to further simplify targeting.

IR radiation measurements, conversion, and temperature display on the TN203L is all processed within one second. Though some professional models may have faster response times (a half of a second is common), a one-second-response time is pretty common for pocket IR thermometers. The TN203L can process temperatures from minus 33° to 250° Centigrade.
