Methods of back pain relief vary depending on the nature of the injury or disease that is causing the pain. Back pain is one of the most common complaints in society today, to the extent that nearly everyone will suffer from it at some point. The back takes an enormous amount of strain, even during normal activities. The vertebral disks are designed to cushion the spine and make it flexible. Their job also makes them vulnerable to stress and herniation. Chronic back pain is often caused by a herniated disk, which occurs when a disk slips out of its normal space and presses on a nerve. Sciatica is caused by a herniated disk pressing on the sciatic nerve, and this condition often occurs during pregnancy or as a result of heavy lifting.

Degenerative bone diseases such as osteoarthritis are also leading causes of back pain. Since age causes a thinning of the liquid that protects disks, the use of glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, and a substance called sam-e can strengthen the tissues that cushion joints. This may halt the progression of the disease, bringing back pain relief to those who suffer from long-term degeneration of the spine.

Exercises and spine-pulling techniques that take pressure off of the spine also provide back pain relief for many people. Aspirin and prescription medication provides relief with minimal side effects when taken in the proper dosages. Once a diagnosis is made, the proper treatment can be prescribed and the patient can start the program that will work best for his or her particular condition.
