A person's choice in pain medications is a personal one. Often, it is a decision made under the advice of a doctor, but often it is a matter of personal preference. Basically, when looking for the right medication one has a choice between prescription drugs and natural remedies, known as nutraceuticals. The latter are defined as substances derived from food sources that have medicinal qualities and are known to treat disease. They are an alternative to traditional steroidal and non-steroidal medications.

Pain Medications That Work Naturally

One of the benefits of natural pain remedies is their relative safety. Compared to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) or prescription pain medication, natural supplements are much less likely to irritate the stomach or cause damage to the heart and liver. Another benefit is the fact that these substances generally relieve pain by healing the body, rather than simply masking the symptoms.

Glucosamine and chondroitin are two common organic pain medications that actually build cartilage, thereby reversing the effects of arthritis and other joint diseases. This alleviates pain by creating a new cushion between bones. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, have been found to help reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. SAM-e, which is a compound produced by the body, is critical in the making of proteoglycans. These substances help renew cartilage. SAM-e also plays an important role in the synthesis of various proteins.

Many of the natural pain medications on the market today are substances that are either made by the body or derived from organic sources. This makes them non-toxic to the body and less likely to have side effects. They work with the body to assist in natural healing processes, and this makes them a safe and effective alternative to prescription medications.
