Pain relief is a health and wellness issue that has taken on increasing importance for many reasons. An aging population facing joint disease, larger numbers of people engaging in strenuous exercise, and an increase in stress-related ailments are some of the factors making the study of pain more relevant to modern society. Advances in research over the past few decades have yielded promising results in the understanding and treating of pain in human beings.

The Latest in Pain Relief

Today's trend in the treatment of pain is toward natural remedies. The medical community in general is starting to recognize that many prescription steroidal and non-steroidal medications have side effects that range from unpleasant to dangerous. Thus, an effort is being made to put more research into naturally derived pain medications. Some of these are available over-the-counter as preventative care for joints and tissues.

The most commonly recommended alternative pain relief remedies are glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM (methyl sulfonyl methane) and SAM-e, a naturally occurring substance found in the body. The idea behind using compounds that are either made by the body or derived organically is that they will work more effectively than synthetic substances. SAM-e, for example, is found in almost all of the body's tissues. It regulates hormones, builds cartilage, and produces substances that help the liver get rid of toxins.

Glucosamine and chondroitin are often found together in pain relief formulas. They work to build and maintain cartilage by stimulating cell growth and keeping new cartilage elastic. MSM is a sulfur compound that is a naturally occurring analgesic. It reduces inflammation in the joints and builds new cartilage. These compounds are recognized as safe and effective alternatives to prescription synthetic drugs, as they have few side effects when taken in the proper dosage.
