Sound Sleep

Boy, you don't think about sound sleep until you don't get it for a while. As we age, it becomes more common to have difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep. Over time, if you continue to lose out on high quality sleep, especially deep sleep, both your mind and your body begin to suffer. It has been proven through various scientific studies that people who are chronically deprived of sleep are less alert, miss more days of work, get into more accidents, get sick more often, and suffer from depression and anxiety more than people who do get enough sleep per night.

Our body goes through sleep cycles every night that consist of deep sleep, light sleep, and REM sleep. It is during REM sleep that we dream, and this is the time that our eyes tend to move back and forth, thus the Rapid Eye Movement term. During deep sleep, our bodies recuperate from the stresses of the day, which is why it is vital to get enough deep sleep each night for total mind and body recovery.

The Importance of Sound Sleep

There is a connection between aging and loss of sound sleep. As we age, our bodies tend to receive less and less vital hormones that we need in order to continue sleeping well night after night. Of course a stressful situation can interfere with sleep occasionally, but it is the overall pattern that is important. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is necessary for us to sleep soundly and ward off the effects of aging.

Gamma Amino Butyric Acid is an amino acid and neurotransmitter in the brain that also induces sound sleep cycles. However, if there is a deficiency of GABA, sleep can begin to suffer.
