Androstenedione Product

Will an androstenedione product help manage symptoms of menopause? Androstenedione is an anabolic steroid hormone usually sold to athletes and weight lifters as a muscle builder or performance enhancer. It is easily converted by the liver to testosterone and may also increase levels of estrogen in the blood. For this reason, it has been considered as a remedy for menopausal symptoms.

What Does an Androstenedione Product Do?

After menopause, the level of testosterone in a woman's body declines abruptly. These lower levels can result in decreased libido and loss of energy. Testosterone may also protect against loss of bone density. One hundred milligrams of an androstenedione product can more than double the level of testosterone in the body - some studies have shown that it increases levels six-fold.

Finding the correct dosage of an androstenedione product may require some experimentation. At menopause, the androgen levels in a woman's body decrease by about 10 to 50 percent, while estrogen levels decline 70 to 80 percent. With the androgen-to-estrogen ratio already increased, further use of an androstenedione product may result in increased facial hair, a deeper voice, and other masculine traits and characteristics.

Increased levels of androstenedione have been shown to improve bone density, libido and energy levels. However, there are still unanswered questions about the appropriate use of these steroid hormones. Dosage levels, interactions and long-term effects are still being studied. Be sure to discuss any supplements you might take with your primary healthcare provider.
