Early MenopauseWritten by Sarah Provost Early menopause can occur for a variety of reasons. Technically, the term "early menopause" refers to menopause that occurs before the age of 45. Menopause occurring before the age of 40 is referred to as "premature menopause." The primary cause of early or premature menopause is the shutting down of the ovaries, whether this is caused surgically, by radiation treatments or simply comes about naturally. Symptoms of Early MenopauseAll the ordinary symptoms of menopause - hot flashes, sleep disorders, mood disorders, vaginal atrophy - occur during an early menopause. But many of them, especially hot flashes, are more severe, especially when early menopause is the result of surgery or cancer treatment. Hormone replacement therapy will resolve many of these symptoms, but HRT is not recommended for those who have had cancer. Herbs such as Black Cohosh and a diet rich in soy products are two of the most commonly recommended means of dealing with menopause symptoms. Lifestyle changes such as getting more exercise and managing stress are also useful. Sexual problems are among the more devastating symptoms of early menopause. As estrogen decreases, whether naturally or suddenly through surgery, vaginal tissues lose elasticity and lubrication. This can make intercourse painful, and can even lead to tears in the vaginal tissue. These problems add to the already considerable emotional response that many women have to early menopause. It's important to know that these symptoms can be treated and that you can enjoy an active sex life after early menopause. If hormone replacement therapy is not an option, there are estrogen creams to be applied locally. Even a Vitamin E capsule used as a vaginal suppository will be of help. It's crucially important that you talk with your partner about what you are feeling. The loss of libido associated with menopause and exacerbated by physical discomfort can cause problems in your relationship. Be sure that your partner is brought into loop and understands the process you are going through.
