Natural Estrogen ReplacementWritten by Sarah Provost Natural estrogen replacement refers to the use of phytoestrogens, or plant estrogens, to supplement declining levels of estrogen after menopause. While phytoestrogens are not chemically identical to human estrogen, the substance binds with estrogen receptors in the cell. Therefore, phytoestrogens act like human estrogen and have much the same effects. Natural Estrogen Replacement with Soy ProductsSoybeans, and the products made from them, are a particularly good source of phytoestrogens. Many physicians and nutritionists recommend that women modify their diets to include soy before trying more drastic means of estrogen replacement, such as Premarin. The best way to get soy into your diet is through foods such as tofu, tempeh, miso, soy nuts and "dairy" products made from soy, such as milk, yogurt and cheese. Processed supplements are less effective, and some soy powders lose all their phytoestrogens in the processing. Some herbs also provide phytoestrogens, and can therefore be used in natural estrogen replacement. Black Cohosh is probably the most commonly used, followed by dong quai. Evening primrose oil is also sold as a menopause remedy, but because it can have serious side effects, it is not recommended by most physicians. It is important to remember that natural estrogen replacement can carry with it the same risks as traditional hormone therapy. Though phytoestrogens are relatively weak compared to human estrogen, if taken in high enough doses, they can have the same effects. It's important to discuss your supplements with your healthcare provider, especially if you still have a uterus, since it may be necessary to take progesterone to protect you from endometrial cancer, just as it is with manufactured estrogen.
