Disposable Air FiltersWritten by Norene Anderson There is a variety of disposable air filters. The most common is an inexpensive one-inch fiberglass or polyester filter. These need to be changed every month. This filter is basically designed to prevent the heating and air conditioning unit from being damaged by an excess amount of dirt or debris. It is not dense enough to capture the tiny particulates that are the source of most allergy symptoms. Another type of disposable air filter is a one-inch filter made from polyester or cotton media. It is denser than fiberglass. This filter is available as pleated or flat design. The media is more effective at capturing the smaller particles than the fiberglass. This type of air filter will fit most standard units. Custom sizes are available from most air filter providers. MERV ratings vary from a MERV 6 to MERV 11. Efficient Disposable Air FiltersMany of the more efficient disposable filters are available in one-inch, two-inch, and four-inch thicknesses. Six-inch models are available for some special order filters. It is important to match the filter with the unit. Make sure the airflow restriction is within the manufacturer's guidelines. Damage to the heating and cooling unit can occur if there is too much drag on the motor. Disposable air filters can offer as much relief from air pollutants as any permanent filter. The secret is in keeping the filter changed frequently enough to provide adequate media surface for capturing and holding particulates. Many pollutants are invisible to the naked eye. That makes it important to stick to a schedule of replacing the filters on a regular basis.
