The 3M company manufactures Filtrete filters. This is designed for the whole-house heating and cooling system to improve the quality of the indoor air. Microparticles are attracted and captured by the electrostatic fibers in the media. This rids the air of the irritants to the nasal passages and respiratory system such as dust, dust mites, and pollen.

Filtrete filters are rated from a MERV 8 to a MERV 12. The MERV 8 will capture mold spores and other large allergens such as large dust particulates. It is designed with a media that is not conducive to mold, mildew, or bacterial growth. It is recommended to replace this filter every three months minimum.

Improve Indoor Air with Filtrete

The MERV 12 filter is rated to capture 90 percent of large allergens such as pet dander and mold spores. It will also reduce the amount of particles that carry viruses and bacteria. Microscopic allergens are caught in the finely weaved media. As with other Filtrete filters, it does not support the growth of fungi, mold, bacteria, or mildew if used according to manufacturer's guidelines.

The MERV 11 rated filters meet the Indoor Air Quality Guidelines established by the American Lung Association. It captures airborne micro particulates such as smoke and pollen. The best filter for any home is one that targets the known allergens. If there is a general need for air purification, the best filter is the higher MERV ratings. These will capture the most particles from 0.3 microns and up.
