Pleated Air Filters

Pleated air filters offer a greater amount of surface coverage to trap pollutants than the traditional flat filters. These disposable filters come with a MERV rating of at least an 11. This means the filter will capture particles such as carpet lint, smoke, dust mite feces, mold, pet dander, pollen, and bacteria.

It is important to make sure the media will not promote the growth of mold or bacteria. Standard sizes of pleated air filters are one-inch, two-inch, and four-inch deep folds. The design of pleats contributes to the capture of the particles forced through by the airflow. The heavier particles become stuck in the pleat folds while the microscopic particles are attracted to the sides of the pleats.

Pleated Air Filters Compared

The controlled spacing is conducive to utilization of the full media while maintaining a consistent airflow. The cost of replacement is reduced when pleated air filters are used because they last longer. The added surface area can contain a much larger amount of pollutants before requiring to be replaced.

The filter media for many of the replacement filters is 100 percent synthetic with electrostatically charged fibers. The frame should be constructed of material that is resistant to moisture and corrosion. The pleats should be guaranteed to retain shape without collapsing or bowing. Check for the rating by Underwriters Laboratory for UL Class 2. It is easy to get all of the ratings confused, but it is important in choosing the best filter for you to check the MERV and UL ratings.
