Window treatments are essential to finishing a design scheme. Curtain panels, or fabric window treatments, can be found in a variety of fabrics and styles. They can be bought individually or as a pair. Depending on the size of the window, multiple panels may be needed to adequately cover the window.

Types of Curtains

Before shopping for curtains to fit a particular room, the type of curtain should be considered. There is a wealth of variety in this department. Curtain panels can either be shirred with a window frame or mounted outside the window frame. Shirred curtains have a pocket sewed into the top of the curtain panel to accommodate the curtain rod. This type of curtain is most popular in kitchens and bathrooms.

Mounting the panel outside the frame allows one to manipulate the apparent size of the window with the curtain panels. These curtain panels are tab-top curtains, tie-top curtains or grommet-top curtains. Tab-top curtains have fabric loops on the top that a rod is threaded through. Tie-top curtains have fabric ties on the top of the panel that are tied to the rod. And, grommet-top panels have metal eyelets on the top that can be used with curtain rings or tension wire.

Curtain panels come as many different fabrics as imaginable and selecting the right one can be challenging. The function of the curtain should be the first consideration when deciding. If the primary purpose of the curtain is to complete the look of the room, the color and pattern of the curtain fabric should be the deciding factor. If the primary function is to shelter the room from light, the type of fabric (heavy and non-translucent) is most important. If privacy is desired, sheer curtains allow a lot of light, but conceal the room from the outside.

A typical system, if there is such a thing, is several times that size, and it is not unheard of to have a system 20 times that large.
