When you buy fittings and equipment for your home, it's a good idea to make sure they comply with ANSI specifications. The American National Standards Institute has laid down guidelines for safety and standards for a wide range of household fittings and equipment for consumer protection. ANSI is equivalent to the European ISO standards.

ANSI is a private organization that administers voluntary standardization and conformity on the part of a wide range of industries. They are a non-profit body whose mission is to enhance global competitiveness. About 1000 US companies strive to meet ANSI specifications in the goods they produce, and their goods are marked as such.

Complying with ANSI Specifications

Any company may apply for ANSI specifications accreditation, but by no means all of them achieve it. When you buy from a company whose goods are accredited by ANSI, you are buying from a company that strives for excellence. Such companies realize that only excellence will give them an advantage in the market place in the long run. This kind of competition is very beneficial for the consumer, and it is good for industry as a whole too.

If it is important to you that the goods you buy meet certain standards, then you might want to make it your policy to look for goods that meet ANSI specifications. You will be joining an elite clientele for whom quality and value are watchwords. They realize that however high standards are already in US industry, there is always room for improvement.
