Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal unit is no longer considered a luxury, but more a necessity in today's kitchen. They are so useful for reducing the volume of garbage, and especially smelly garbage. In fact, many kitchens now have two disposers; one for the main sink and one for the prep sink. The warning here is that this could be very noisy if they're ever both going at once.

The issues to be noted with garbage disposal units are noise, and smell. Disposal units are famous for being very noisy. Some are more so than others, and with a bit of diligence you can find one that is tolerable if you look. They're never going to be as quiet as the dishwasher, for example though.

Other Garbage Disposal Issues

Even those who are spotless around the kitchen, for some reason overlook the fact that the garbage disposal needs cleaning too. If they're not flushed through properly after use, you can get some pretty overpowering pongs invading your living space after a short while, particularly in hot weather. Whatever you do though, don't try to clean the disposer with drain cleaner (lye) or bleach. The correct way to do it is fill the sink half full with soapy water and then let it go all at once. If you have unidentified smells, you can do this several times to make sure. Orange or lemon peel, and ice cubes are good if things have already gotten out of hand.

The great thing about a garbage disposal unit is that it will relieve you of worry about what kind of things are slipping down the sink. Often, sinks without a disposer are blocked frequently. No such inconvenience with a disposer--verything can be cleared immediately.
