Discount hardware can be extremely functional, but is usually less decorative than most cabinet hardware available today. Inexpensive hardware is available in a variety of colors and styles, but is usually mass produced and will not last as long as the more expensive alternatives. This type of hardware is generally available in three materials, wood, plastic, and steel, allowing discount hardware manufactures to still offer a diverse selection to their consumer base.

Wood, Plastic, and Steel Hardware

Wood hardware is limited to handles, since a wood hinge quickly wears down over time. Discount manufacturers create their handles and knobs out of wood composites, making these handles best for painted cabinetry. If you are looking to purchase wood handles to stain, it would be best to select a more expensive handle made of the same type of wood as your cabinetry.

Plastic handles come in a variety of colors, and often come in a variety of fun shapes, making them great for children's furniture. Additionally, plastic handles can be cleaned with any household solvent, making them a good fit for high use items. The life span of plastic hardware is not long, as the connections may begin to wear down over a short period of time.

The strongest and longest lasting budget hardware material is steel. Finishes may wear down over time making it less attractive, but your hardware will stay structurally sound. If you should choose to purchase wood or plastic hardware, attempt to find hardware that uses steel connection points for better extended performance. This way you are sure the get the longest amount of use of the least amount of money.
