Dorm decorating is probably the last thing on your mind when you get your college acceptance letter. However, as the summer draws to a close and you get restless when thinking about starting a new school, making new friends, and moving out of the house, it's also time to start thinking about the purchases you need to make for your dorm decorating. From bedding to pictures and dressers, you can really make a dorm room unique.

Dorm Decorating 101

This may be the first class you take in college--how to decorate your dorm. A trick in order not to feel overwhelmed is to eliminate clutter. In other words, don't bring too many kickknacks or such things. You will need the obvious: your clothes, your school supplies, toiletries and some pictures of mom, dad and some friends.

Decorating doesn't just mean making your room look pretty--it also means making it well organized. With the limited space your are provided with, you need to make sure your clothes and your school supplies (including computer, printer and books) have their spots--you are here to study, and the rest of your essentials can find a place after you've arranged these necessities. Many bedding and organizational stores or department stores are prepared for the influx of college students and are well stocked with plastic drawer units on wheels, flat storage containers for under your bed and many more useful things.

It's important to see your living area before you go out and buy a lot of stuff, as you will surely be sharing the space with your roommate. Remember to keep dorm decorating very simple and functional. Once you've mastered fitting all your stuff in a postage stamp-sized square, you are ready for college!
