Air HandlersWritten by Patricia Skinner An air handler is essentially the indoor unit for an air pump. Its primary purpose is to make a heating or cooling system more efficient. It achieves its purpose by moving cool or warm air through the ducts in your home to produce the desired air temperature. If you match an air handler to the right air conditioning unit or air pump (hot air) then you will achieve maximum efficiency. Different Kinds of Air HandlersOne of the ways an air handler can lower your bills and make you more comfortable is by removing the humidity, dust and impurities from the air. There are different kinds of air handlers, most of which are designed to be installed vertically or horizontally. You can find single piece, modular or variable speed air handlers. It is practical to choose an air handler that also filters your air for comfort and health. Some air handlers come ready equipped with HEPA filters. High volume air handlers serve a slightly different purpose to ordinary air handlers. They can turn a room into a "clean room" that is safe for handling even dangerous substances and for performing delicate scientific procedures. They can do this by converting any room into a negative pressure room. Although air ducts are generally a healthy addition to the temperature control equipment in your home, you need to take some precautions to make sure they remain that way. It is very important to make sure your air ducts are tight so that the air handler will not force mold, mildew and dust particles (along with air coming from the air handler) into your rooms. The system needs to be serviced regularly to take care of these issues.
