Fireplace Mantel Shelves

There's no question that fireplace mantel shelves are a boon to interior designers. After all, fireplaces are the focal point of a room. Think about it: what's the first thing your eye gravitates to as you glance around a room with a fireplace? Whether there are people gathered in the room, sunlight streaming in the windows, or a dinner party in progress, you notice the fireplace. It's a subconscious reflex.

Maybe you have a fireplace but no mantel--after all, many modern ones do not--adding fireplace mantel shelves is easier than you think. It doesn't necessarily mean a major investment either. If you enjoy other home improvement projects, you already know this. Just down the road at your local hardware supply store you can probably find an unfinished mantel and surround for as little as $150 or $200. Installing it is a wonderful weekend project for a rainy Saturday.

You might want to build your own fireplace mantel shelves. Maybe you already have a lovely hearth and simple wrought iron surround. But the stretch of white wall stretching up to the cathedral ceiling is too bare. A portrait or magnificently framed bevel mirror hanging above the fireplace seems naked on its own. You can wrap it all together with two wrought iron brackets and a shelf edged in moulding, all for less than $50. It's that easy.

The great thing about fireplace mantels is how easy and quick it is to change the entire tone of the room. Take down the grouping of antique photograph frames and put up a clear crystal bowl of potpourri. Change the candles in the wrought iron candlesticks to cranberry for the month of December. Fresh cut flowers in spring and summer bring the outdoors indoors in a heartbeat.
