Your idea of classy, premier mantels might be ornate white marble carved in a baroque style. Then again, it might also be the wood paneled colonial style with wrought iron fireplace accessories. For many, workmanship is more of a defining qualification than artistic period or personal taste. That's both fair and accurate.

It's also accurate to say that fireplaces and mantels are a powerful design element. They always have been, ever since the first were cut out from medieval castle walls. Since then, as well, they've been a focal point of interior design. Whether decorating interior spaces is an avocation or a necessity for you, you do know how much the style of fireplace mantels sets the tone for the entire room and even house.

It almost goes without saying that premier mantels will be made of good strong material. The variety of good material that you could find today is phenomenally wide, of course. If you're talking about antique surrounds and mantels, you can find premier mantels in cast iron, mahogany, marble, limestone, or wrought iron.

While replacing a fireplace mantel isn't necessarily expensive, or even that much of a physical undertaking, it's enough of a cost and enough of a bother that you won't be replacing it every six months or five years. You therefore want to make the right design choice. You want to take your time in browsing magazines and websites and fireplace mantel specialists. Don't forget, too, that these experts are well prepared to answer any technical questions on fireplaces you might have.
