Decorated mailboxes are a charming way to add some personality to something you have to have anyway. The same old metal mailbox is uninspiring, to say the least, and many times it will get a little rusty and beat up but people don't bother changing it since it's "just the mailbox." But what if you could use your mailbox as another way to express your style and brighten up your property?

There are decorated mailboxes is many patterns and styles. Some are hand painted with delicate Oriental art, while others feature vibrant flowers. You might be able to find designs with cute animals like birds and butterflies, or with slightly more gender neutral images like lighthouses or golf themes.

Decorated mailboxes can also make your neighbors smile if they're taking a walk around the block. Having an attractive and unique decorated mailbox is a great invitation for people to talk to you and get to know you a little better if they see you around the neighborhood. It's also a great way to identify your house if you're giving directions--a convenience not to be underestimated it you live in a relatively uniform development.

One thing to be aware of is that the US Postal Service has requirements for mailboxes, in terms of dimensions and placement. Officially called "Customer Mail Receptacles" by the always efficient federal government, mailboxes which are placed curb-side all have to have clear approach, and there are rules for lettering, swinging doors, flags, and the like. If you are buying a decorated mail box, make sure that it meets those specifications, or be prepared to ask your delivery person if he or she has a problem with it.
