Futon Covers

Futon covers are designed to protect the futon mattress from outside stains, dirt, and dust. They are also meant to add a new color, pattern, or upholstery design to an otherwise drab or uninteresting futon. Futon covers can extend the life of the futon years beyond their expected age.

If the futon is being used as a couch, its cover should be a bit thicker than regular bedding fabric. Purchase a cover that is machine washable and fitted to be snug over the mattress. Stains should be pre-treated with laundry detergent or with a foaming upholstery shampoo before placing the cover in the machine. Some covers should only be line or air-dried, so check the label before cleaning.

Using Futon Covers to Protect the Futon Mattress

Futon covers for beds should be fitted with an underlying mattress pad or plastic vinyl cover. This will protect the futon mattress from moisture, especially when due to sweating or accidents. It is particularly important to protect children's futons with a waterproof futon cover; otherwise, urination leaks can cause irreparable damage to the mattress.

Futon mattresses should be flipped and rotated once a week to discourage bunching and sagging. To increase the longevity of their futon mattresses, some people take indelible markers and label each of the four corners of their futon covers. By doing so, they will be able to flip their mattress in a steady and even manner throughout the year, just by following the succession of numbers based on the week of the month.
