Faux Paint TreatmentsWritten by Genevieve Hawkins Depending on your degree of skill and tenacity, almost any effect can be created with the right ingredients, quickly and easily. Most faux painting effects take only a little bit of effort and no artistic ability. The important thing is that instructions are followed and the areas not to be painted are masked thoroughly. Wall Painting EffectsWith some knowledge of the technique you want to use, you can do just about anything. Clouds, mural effects, fake marbling, blue jeans, and plaid stripes are all some of the designs that can be created on your walls with just a few shades of latex, some masking tape, a putty knife, and a sponge. The important thing is that the technique is adhered to once started, as inconsistency is the easiest killer of the effect. Two of the most popular ways to paint walls both involve almost no effort or extra time over regular house painting. Rag rolling involves wrapping a rag or old towel around the outside of the roller, then painting the the final coat with it. This gives a muted effect that can be very striking if the alternating colors go together well. Sponging involves a similar concept with a large natural sponge being the applicator for the final color. This can look very good if the color has been sufficiently muted. More intensive painting effects, such as color washing or marbling, may take careful instruction, but they are nonetheless rather simple once you have the technique down. With some experimenting with latex paints, you may discover techniques that are almost unbelievable. It truly expands the entire idea of what these household paints can do.
