There are several types of furniture refinishing techniques that can be used, often simply depending on what type of furniture is being refurbished. For antique hickory desks, an intensive refinishing process might be the issue, while patio chairs may require an extra coat of spray paint. No matter what the project, there are some helpful hints to get you started, or to see you through.

Refinishing Wood Furniture

If you have solid wood furniture that is neither antique nor completely destroyed, it might behoove you to give it a facelift. By filling in cracks and buying new handles, restaining and refinishing, even the most beat up dressers can look brand new. Usually, the effect only takes a few hours.

There are several suggestions for small annoyances. There are drink circles on many wood furnishings where a drink has been left too long; these are best handled by leaving the area soaking in oil overnight. if this does not work, alcohol will likely remove it with rubbing, although this can also take off more of the finish.

If finishing nails are stuck in the wood, drilling around them might help. Fill holes with grain filler. If you are intending to restain the entire project, just sand carefully, remembering that the sanding job will be the most reflective piece of your final product.
