The cost of having an air conditioning and heating system installed may leave you wanting to do installation yourself. Improperly installing ductwork yourself, though, may end up costing you more money than you save. Any leaks of poor designs can cost you every time you turn on your heating or air-conditioning unit.

Do Your Research

Be sure to research any companies you might potentially hire to install ductwork for you. Find out who their former customers are. Ask if you can visit some of the buildings they've done work on. Talk to the residents or workers and find out how well the heating and cooling system works.

Poor Design

The largest waste of residential energy in the United States is from poorly installed ductwork. As much as 10 to 35 percent of the energy used to heat and cool your home can be lost due to inefficient ductwork installation. Leaky ductwork allows valuable energy to escape your home and get lost in your attic. Inefficient ductwork designs can cause poor air flow or energy waste. Improper insulation of ducts can cause energy waste as well.

Do It Yourself Ductwork

While hiring a professional to install ductwork is the best idea, there are ways to get around shelling out the installation expense. Some companies provide a service where you give them the dimensions of your home and the rooms within and they design a ductwork system for you. The company sends you the system that you install yourself. Only attempt this method if you are experienced in installing ductwork or are willing to risk the consequences of installing ductwork on your own.
