Ways To Save Energy

Every time we make a careless decision about how we use energy, it costs us money and advances pollution of our air, water, and land. There are so many easy and inexpensive ways to save energy, you can start right away. There are really no excuses for not doing something to conserve energy.

Small Ways to Save Energy

Start by cleaning out your air conditioning filters. These filters can get clogged and make your air quality poor and make the air conditioner work harder. Clean the filters about once a month to maintain optimum performance.

Clean the coils on the back of your refrigerator. This will improve the performance of your fridge. Also remember to let foods you've just cooked cool a little before putting them in the fridge. That way the refrigerator doesn't have to work as hard to cool them down. If your fluids get chunks of ice in them while in your fridge, the thermostat is set too low. Try turning it down to a temperature that keeps food cold but doesn't freeze it.

Every time you use hot water in your home, you're probably heating your floor. If you have an electric water heater, you can install a 1" thick piece of foam insulation board under it. This will help the hot water heater to retain the heat it has created, saving energy used to reheat water.

Big Ways to Save Energy

If you're really serious about saving energy and the environment, a few major investments can go a long way. Keep your heating and cooling systems up to date. Older systems use more energy, more harmful substances, and are more likely to have leaks or other problems. Update your system or, better yet, install a geothermal system, which costs more, but will pay for itself in saved energy.
