Holiday Lights

For many of us, holiday lights are our favorite thing about Christmas. Think of all the different ways holiday lights help make Christmas beautiful. Christmas trees are even prettier in the dark than they are during the day. At night, twinkling with lights, Christmas trees truly come alive.

Don't get me wrong--I like all kinds of holiday decorations. I love stockings, trees, and wreaths. But lights are really what make the season magical. Do you remember being a kid, driving around the neighborhood with your parents and siblings, just to look at all the holiday lights? You would laugh at the ones that were silly, groan at the ones that were tacky, and ooh and ahh over the ones that were beautiful.

Decorating with Holiday Lights

What are the best ways to decorate with light for the holidays? First, you'll want to use strings of twinkling, white, or colored lights in your trees and bushes. The effect is particularly pretty on fir trees, but even palm trees look pretty good wrapped in lights.

You'll want to set a candle in each window. Since unattended candles are totally unsafe, I suggest using battery powered candles. They're pretty, last a long time, and are inexpensive. Finally, during the few days before Christmas, line your front lawn with luminaria. Luminaria is the single most beautiful type of holiday light, in my opinion.
