Coir mats are available for use in both residential and commercial applications, with a simple, natural look that goes well with an eco-friendly atmosphere. Current design trends indicate a back-to-basics approach with regard to flooring materials, focusing on natural fibers that contain no harmful substances. Additionally, smooth flooring surfaces are desirable, since they don't harbor dust and allergens the way wall-to-wall carpeting does.

Plant Derived Flooring Materials

Environmentally conscious builders and designers see the benefits of using natural flooring materials in their construction techniques. Materials like coir, wool, jute, and sisal are now seen as excellent alternatives to synthetic fibers. These plant based fibers are not only rapidly renewable and biodegradable, but also durable and cost-effective.

Health conscious home and business owners also commonly use coir and other matting to provide a chemical-free way to trap dirt and germs and prevent their spread throughout the building. Experts suggest that using any kind of door mat upon entrance can substantially affect indoor air quality. And since many people suffer from allergies and asthma, cutting down on airborne contaminants is a must for general well-being.

These mats are typically very coarse and are not uniform in color and texture the way synthetic mats are. They fit in nicely with natural themes in interior design, and many can be customized with a logo or business name. They are useful as interior mats, but shouldn't be used outside, as constant wetness can seriously damage the fibers.
