National Moving Services

Since 1995, the Interstate Commerce Commission no longer regulates national moving companies; now the Department of Transportation does, and it is more concerned with motor vehicle safety than lost or damaged goods. Interstate trucking was deregulated in 1980. When it was regulated, most moving companies charged similar rates but since then, prices have been all over the place.

With all these changes taking place, it is now necessary to get at least three estimates on moving before you have a real idea of what your move will cost. Even then, you should beware the lowest bidder. Some companies bid low to get your business, then expect more money on moving day. They might claim you have more possessions than you said you did or they may say their "unloading fees" were not included in the original estimate.

Local or National: Get the Best Estimates

The best type of estimate for consumers is a binding estimate, where you will pay no more than what is quoted. With non-binding estimates, the mover can charge you up to ten percent more on the day of the move, and collect the rest within 30 days. Those are only a good idea if you plan to sell large items before you move and expect your total moving weight to decrease.

You should get at least three estimates from different moving companies to ensure that you are getting the best price for the service. Ask about any hidden fees. Also, if possible, get an in-home written estimate, rather than receiving a quote over the telephone. It will be more accurate if the moving company sees your belongings and properly inventories them, rather than guessing over the telephone.
