Camp Chairs

The concept behind camp chairs has been a part of human history for thousands of years. For instance, ancient Egyptians and Romans utilized sturdy, portable, "X"-shaped folding chairs for outdoor use and long military conquests. Over the next few millennia, the camp chair became sleeker, lighter, more durable, and easily stored for future use.

While camp chairs were initially meant for the great outdoors, they are also quite useful in more urban settings. For instance, sports enthusiasts will often bring portable camp chairs to field sporting events and tailgate parties. Many outdoor theaters will also advise audience members to bring folding chairs and blankets, as will many late-night museum and planetarium presentations.

Of course, the biggest headache facing owners of camp chairs is how to wash them after a camping trip. Dirt, pollen, tree sap and marshmallow "goo" can stain over the years. Waterproof and nylon fabrics are best for camp chairs. These fabrics are more likely to deflect potentially staining liquids and can be scrubbed with hot soap, water, and a bristle brush.

Purchasing Camp Chairs for Children

Young children can use most adult-sized camp chairs, especially if they are made of a sturdy, lockable frame and durable fabric. However, it is important that parents look carefully at each chair they consider and watch out for poorly made folding chairs that may buckle and fold onto the child. Finally, if the child is going to camp on his own, make sure he can carry the chair bag easily, as most camp chairs weigh between 10 and 14 pounds.
