Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting is an art unto itself and is one of the favorite challenges for any garden designer. Once the full outdoor plan is developed, a lighting expert will come in and choose distinct elements to creatively achieve an overall design in illumination. Using different sized lamps in a variety of colors and luminescences, a smart designer will be able to transform even the most basic landscape into a beautiful midnight fairyland.

There are several considerations to first take into account regarding landscape lighting. The first is safety, especially around deck and patio areas, staircases, walkways, entrances, fences and any potentially dangerous areas near statues, fountains and waterways. The second thought about landscape lighting is the overall mood of the land once it is properly lit, whether that be joyous and festive or romantic and mysterious.

Cover light will illuminate the important eating, sitting and dancing areas of the land and will safely keep barbecues and cooking places well lit. Tables can be lit from center lighting pieces, while overhanging lanterns can bring about an even glow all around. Once the right balance between safe lighting and entertainment lights have been established, the designer can then think about where to place accent lights.

Types of Accent Lanterns for Landscape Lighting

Accent lights can include hanging rope lanterns, fountain bulbs placed under water, and track lighting along walkways and down flights of stairs. Some deluxe accent lights are shaped like rocks and feature small circular bulbs that glow in an inviting way. Others are shaped like old fashioned lanterns and can be placed amongst bushes and shrubs, hung from the branches of trees, or attached to the sides of fences for a fun and inviting look.
