The breeding habitat for mosquitoes is in standing water that is stale or stagnant. This provides the perfect environment for the egg to exist, develop into larva, and complete the cycle of pupa to adult. Feeding in the water is essential to sustenance and growth.

Eliminating all areas of standing water will greatly reduce the need for further insect control. Areas that need to be checked include tarps over boats or cars, clogged rain gutters, saucers of flowerpots, areas around faucets that can puddle, and many other such places. Also check for low places in the lawn that does not drain well during rain or watering.
