Safe Mosquito Control

Safe mosquito control, without the use of pesticides, is your first defense against disease-carrying mosquitoes. Here are some ways to control mosquitoes naturally and lower your chances of getting bit by those pesky bugs.

Use safe mosquito control products such as herbal bug repellents. Herbs that repel mosquitoes include basil, eucalyptus, cloves, geranium, peppermint, rosemary, lemon balm (citronella), onions, garlic, and feverfew. Products containing these herbs will help reduce the number of bites you receive. You can make your own natural mosquito repellents with this recipe:

10 drops essential oil (see list of herbs, above, for choices)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Combine the ingredients in a glass jar and stir until it's blended. To use, dab a few drops on your skin or clothing. Pregnant women should consult with their doctor before using essential oils.

Safe Mosquito Control Outdoors

Often mosquitoes are breeding just a few feet away from your home. You might not need high tech mosquito traps or pesticides if you remove any stagnant water from your yard and garden. Check flowerpots, old tires, gutters, and birdhouses. Since mosquitoes breed in standing water, eliminating it from your yard will go a long way toward controlling mosquitoes.

Put mosquito netting over playpens and strollers to protect small children from bites. Good, old-fashioned swatting can be very effective at killing mosquitoes if there aren't too many flying around. Sitting near a fan helps; the breeze will repel some of them. Use citronella candles. If weather permits, wear long sleeved shirts and pants. Finally, if possible, avoid the outdoors during peak mosquito activity hours.
