Pool Filter CartridgesWritten by Seth Cotterell If you have a pool or spa at your home, odds are that you're probably using a cartridge filter. If this is the case, then there will come a time when the filter's cartridge will need to be replaced. Regular pool and spa maintenance is required to keep your pool in good shape, and this will also extend the life of your cartridge. Replacing Filter CartridgesCartridges need to be replaced for many possible reasons. Sometimes, the cartridge simply tears or breaks. This is often referred to in the industry as a catastrophic failure. It sounds scary, but replacing the cartridge is actually quite simple. This is not the most common reason why cartridges need replacement. Typically, the cause is something much more mundane. Over time, dirt, algae, oils, dead skin, sediments, and other particles accumulate on the filter. When enough substance has accumulated, the cartridge will not filter properly and it must be replaced. All filter manufacturers sell replacement cartridges for convenient maintenance and the cost is usually fairly low. There are a few things you can do to minimize the frequency of cartridge replacement. Keeping your pool or spa properly maintained is the key. Water chemistry in your spa or pool must be kept within balance. Do not use too many chemicals or let the ph balance fluctuate. Following manufacturer cleaning directions exactly will also extend the life of your cartridge. Using a special chemical treatment to remove oils from the cartridge will also extend its useful life.
