Pole Chain Saws

Pole chain saws are a necessary tool when it comes time to prune large branches off of a tree. They eliminate the need to climb the tree with a regular chain saw (which can be a delicate and even dangerous proposition), and allow you to prune high branches without even using a ladder or a crane. A good place to start researching this product is by looking at some of the features of pole chain saws and how they work.

Features of Pole Chain Saws

The key to a good pole chain saw is balance. Since you're going to be holding a saw several feet away from your body, it's important to minimize lopsided weight and stress on your arms, so you can control the saw with precision. Pole chain saws achieve good balance by distributing the weight down towards the engine, with just enough weight up at the saw end to keep the extended pole arm stable.

Most pole chain saws will allow you to cut branches that are up to 13 feet above the ground. Usually the saw arm is only about five feet long (and in many cases can be shortened or extended easily), and the rest of the distance is made up by your body height and arm length. A good pole saw will have about a 12 inch blade, which will allow you to cut easily through relatively thick branches.

Extra features on pole saws can make a big difference. One thing to look for is a good exhaust system that sends the engine exhaust away from your body. Another good feature is an ergonomic grip and body plate that allows you to balance the saw comfortably in your hand while bracing it against your body. Like regular chain saws, you should also look for a pole saw that is easy to start up even in cold weather situations.
