Self propelled lawn mowers are a real boon for people who don't want to spend their entire day mowing the lawn. Even if you have a small lawn and no room for a large riding mower, there are self propelled lawn mowers out there that can help you, at the very least, reduce the effort of landscaping. Before buying, it's important to take a look at some of the types of mowers out there.

Styles of Self Propelled Lawn Mowers

The simplest self propelled lawn mowers are basically just push mowers without the need to push. They utilize the engine that drives the cutting blade to also drive the mower forward. By engaging a clutch on the mower's handle, the wheels start spinning, and all you have to do is walk behind it.

More advanced (and expensive) self propelled mowers are basically like small tractors. They feature more powerful engines, and you actually sit on them and ride around while the blade underneath cuts your grass. These are the easiest and fastest machines for cutting your lawn, and are almost a necessity if you have a large property with more than an acre of grass.

When buying a self propelled mower, it's important to keep in mind the type of property you have. If you have a lot of hills and gulleys, you'll need to look for a mower with good balance and well tractioned wheels. Many mowers will tend to slip or even flip over if you try to ride them or push them along the side of a steep hill.
