Surprisingly, not all mold is toxic. Some mold has been discovered to be very beneficial, such as penicillin, or delicious, as with bleu cheese. Most types of mold, however, are toxic and highly undesirable in our environment. Having a mold problem at home can be very dangerous for your health. Black mold, or stachybotrys atra, is the most dangerous. It produces mycotoxins that can cause your lungs to bleed, and may cause memory and hearing loss. Any type of mold can make it very difficult to breathe and give you flu symptoms.

Toxic Mold

Mold can grow on basically anything, wood, carpet, paper, furniture and food. Excessive moisture in the home is the main cause for mold. Water and damp spots should not be left for over 48 hours. You should dry those wet places well and make sure you get rid of all mold if any has already grown. Look for any plumbing that might be leaking around the house, and make sure your home is well ventilated at all times. If carpets or any other materials have absorbed mold, they should ideally be replaced as soon as possible.

Good ventilation along with efficient exhaust fans can help limit mold problems. Make sure the ventilation in high humidity areas such as your kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room is particularly strong and effective. Mold sends out little spores that float on the air. These spores can cause allergic reactions and can make you feel tired all the time.

HEPA vacuum cleaners, whether upright vacuum cleaners, canister vacuums or backpacks are all very effective and eat up mold easily without recycling it back into the atmosphere. Bleach is very effective at killing mold. You can use it diluted on walls and surfaces; just make sure it does not come in contact with any furnishing fabric because it will take the color out of it. A safer way to kill mold is treating the room with high temperature steam. This is a new method that is very effective at killing all mold spores, even those that are embedded deep in carpets and upholstery.
